The British government is vowing to escalate its crackdown on drunkenness as Christmastime approaches. According to Home Secretary Charles Clarke, speaking after release of a new report:
"It is encouraging to see the results of the latest police crackdown on alcohol-fuelled disorder."
These "encouraging" results from a summertime arrest-fest include 780 people thrown in the back seat of the squad car and "858 fixed penalty notices" -- presumably citations for public drunkeness. More encouragement:
The survey also revealed a six per cent rise in violent crime, in the three months to the end of June.
Oh, good work. Ignore the real crime. The drunks are easier to catch. More from The Publican here.
