South Carolina may soon join Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas in dealing an important blow against crime. A state bill, proposed by Republican Rep. Ralph Davenport, would make it a felony to sell sex toys, and allow law enforcement to seize assorted dildos and vibrators from raided businesses. People convicted under the measure will face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
But wait, it gets better — in Davenport's county, the cops have already been raiding adult-oriented businesses and confiscating all manner of so-far legal merchandise:
The sheriff's office there seized movies, sex toys, sexual-enhancement pills and surveillance tapes from two businesses in January. One of the stores, Priscilla's, sued the sheriff's office, claiming the raid violated constitutional rights and asked for the return of the seized items. Sheriff Chuck Wright refused. The case has not yet gone to trial.
One interviewee in this article bemoans the effect of the no-sex-toys law on couples whose need for the devices is supposedly therapeutic, as opposed to merely pleasurable. I wonder what Justice Scalia, who is rumored to enjoy a little assplay with the wife (whether with a 9-inch purple dildo or not, who's to say?), might eventually make of that distinction.

Wow… yet ANOTHER stupid, petty waste of time… yet ANOTHER group of people trying to force their ‘values’ on the rest of us… These politicians, in their need to look/feel important seem do anything they can to pass these… god damned STUPID laws… a FELONY to sell a rubber dick!!? Are you shitting me? I’d laugh, if I wasn’t so scared…
Five years in jail and a $10,000 fine for having dildo… hey, I have an idea for our elected ‘leaders’… get your collective heads out of your collective fucking asses! Instead of focusing your efforts and OUR TAX dollars on ridiculous laws such as this, try doing something worthwhile, say, I don’t know… getting the REAL criminals off the streets, feeding/sheltering the homeless, passing laws that will HELP the people… say, maybe you can even work on some of that crap you promised to do, when you were trying so hard to get elected…
Rep. Ralph Davenport, you can’t even be considered pathetic… Do us all a favor, step down and stop wasting the peoples time and money… We need someone in that office who might use it for something legit…
It’s no wonder why the world is what it is… look at these retards we elect… passing laws prohibiting rubber dongs, when so many other important issues get overlooked…

Alabama has a proposed to outlaw sex toys. The big problem with this law, aside from its intrusive nature, is that ANYTHING can be used as a sex toys. (not that would know personally) ; )
Would this law ban, shoes, stockings, hands and computers? And, of course, it does nothing to make people more moral, anyway.

Our legislators must all be voyeurs! They can't stay out of the bedrooms of U.S. citizens. After outlawing sex toys, I assume they will outlaw masturbation. Will they out law phallic fruits and vegetables? "Arrest her, she's got a zucchini with intent." Where does this ridiculous kind of legislation end?

This is completely ridiculous. It amazes me that in this day and age laws are being made that are totally archaic. The problem is not that MOST people in a state like AL think sex toys should be banned... it's just that the closed minded fools are the law makers. Not to mention, this is happening in a state where teen pregnancy and domestic violence is RAMPANT. They should spend more time making laws that protect their citizens and not ones that censor or judge a person's sexual practices. Oh well, I guess they will just have to order sex toys online or move out of the backwoods!

This is preposterous! There are crimes that are much more serious which are worthy of time and budget than these harmful products. Sex toys are not intended to kill or harm, but rather to add spice to a sexual relationship and self pleasuring. I hope that the lawmakers behind it would reassess their ways before jumping blindly into outlawing such products.

I am southern & see no issue or anything wrong if you are 18 or older you got the right to sell or buy.

I see that Mr. Davenport wants to be a member of the "group" (i.e., politicians) that can "stick it to" the rest of us... while denying us the same pleasure. :)
Of course, the satirical cartoon will show a possible reason he doesn't need a dildo is that he might have a "real" penis pleasing him and wants to deny similar pleasure to others without such luck...
