Why Some Parents Homeschool

Some (like the reader who sent me the link) homeschool in part because schools have a tendency to punish students who dare open their mouths in ways the faculty finds less than pleasing. To make things worse: In a culture that has turned overwhelmingly toward authoritarianism, and constitutional free-speech guarantees notwithstanding, it's now easy to find a judge who'll put his boot on the neck of timeworn teenage insolence.

[thanks, Bob!]

This is quite scary! I would hate to think my kids have to take in the swill they feed them in public school and not be able to say anything about it.

We started homeschooling our kids when our first was coming home from FIRST GRADE with tears in his eyes, and hating school, because of the class seating arrangements. The teacher placed the students in seats according to their scores on their last test. Highest grades in the front row, lowest in the back. Our son was very upset whenever he had to sit in the second row, so I can only imagine the effect it had on the kids in the back.

I've never been the kind of person who could eat much shit, especially where my kids are concerned. Homeschooling is the single best thing we ever did for our children. Our youngest, who never set foot in a "school" classroom until he entered college (his mother taught him how to read all by herself), is now a senior with a 4.0 GPA. And he finds college to be ridiculously easy.

My little cousin was home schooled except for one semester in 1st grade. His idiot English teacher sent back a note asking my uncle and aunt to stop teaching him such big words and reading to him. My uncle promptly sent back the note with grammar and spelling corrected in red pen, with a following note that what they taught him at home was their own business and she needed to be re-taught English.

If the school administration wants its students to speak well of them maybe they should actually teach instead of indoctrinating children. Taking away this students freedom of speech is not going to make anyone think any better of them.

So, what did the parent do to work with the school? Probably nothing. IF parents work with schools instead of against them then maybe in time society will care. Everyone is ignorant - including me becuase we let things that are wrong go. Should a kid be allowed to slander a teacher? No. Should a school district be sued for punishing a kid? No. There is no easy solution. If I were that teacher though I would be suing for slander. Remember...big picture not the petty shit.
